About the Epipremnum Genus

The genus Epipremnum belongs to the Araceae (aroid) family and consists of approximately 15 accepted species of tropical climbing plants native to Southeast Asia, New Guinea, northern Australia, and numerous islands throughout the Pacific. The name Epipremnum is derived from the Greek words "epi" (upon) and "premnon" (tree trunk), referring to the climbing nature of these plants in their native rainforest habitats. The genus was formally established in 1840 by Austrian botanist Heinrich Wilhelm Schott, whose work helped distinguish Epipremnum from several closely related aroid genera.

In the wild, Epipremnum species begin life on the rainforest floor before climbing trees using strong aerial roots. As they ascend into brighter light, many species undergo a remarkable transformation known as heteroblasty, where juvenile leaves mature into dramatically larger foliage with deep splits and natural fenestrations. This striking change is rarely seen in indoor cultivation, where most plants are grown in their juvenile form.

Perhaps the best-known member of the genus is Epipremnum aureum, commonly referred to as Golden Pothos. Despite its common name, it is not a true Pothos. This longstanding horticultural misconception has persisted for decades, and while the name "Pothos" remains widely used in the houseplant trade, botanically the plant belongs to the genus Epipremnum. Today, the genus includes an increasing number of collector varieties admired for their exceptional variegation, unique leaf shape, and vigorous climbing growth.

Epipremnum species are valued for their adaptability, making them among the most versatile tropical houseplants available. Their climbing habit, rapid growth, and impressive foliage have made them favorites for homes, offices, and botanical collections alike. Given proper support and time to mature, many species can produce dramatically larger leaves that closely resemble those found in their natural rainforest environment.
