Hoya 'Mathilde Splash'

The Hoya 'Mathilde Splash' is a charming hybrid between Hoya carnosa and Hoya serpens, featuring round, succulent-like leaves with silver splashes scattered across their surface. This easy-to-care-for, trailing plant is perfect for hanging baskets or trained to climb. It's a fantastic choice for both beginner and experienced Hoya lovers.

🌱 Care Instructions:

  • Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. Lower light conditions may reduce the variegation and slow growth.

  • Watering: Allow the soil to dry out partially between waterings. Water thoroughly when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry. Reduce watering in the winter months when growth slows.

  • Soil: Prefers a well-draining mix—a blend of orchid bark, perlite, and peat-based soil works well. A chunky Hoya or succulent mix is ideal to prevent overwatering.

  • Temperature: Best kept in temperatures between 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Avoid exposure to temperatures below 50°F (10°C).

  • Humidity: Enjoys moderate to high humidity (50-70%). It can tolerate average household humidity but will thrive with higher levels. Consider placing it near a humidifier or grouping it with other plants for added humidity.

  • Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Use a fertilizer higher in phosphorus to encourage blooming.

  • Growth: This is a trailing or vining plant that can be grown in a hanging basket or on a trellis. It is a relatively fast grower when provided with optimal care.

  • Flowering: Produces fragrant, star-shaped blooms with a soft pink hue and fuzzy texture. Blooms best when the plant is root-bound and mature. Do not remove the spent flower peduncles, as Hoyas rebloom from the same spot.

  • Repotting: Hoyas prefer to be slightly root-bound, so repot only when necessary (every 2-3 years). Choose a pot with excellent drainage.

  • Pests/Diseases: Can occasionally attract mealybugs, aphids, or spider mites. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth and treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.

  • Toxicity: Pet-friendly! The Hoya 'Mathilde Splash' is non-toxic to pets and humans, making it a great choice for homes with animals.

🌟 Fun Fact:

The silver speckles on the leaves of Hoya 'Mathilde Splash' are caused by air pockets in the leaf cells, which reflect light and create the shimmering effect.
