Hoya 'Bella'

Hoya 'Bella' is a charming and easy-to-care-for vining plant, loved for its small, waxy leaves and clusters of star-shaped flowers. It's often called the "Sweetheart Hoya" due to its delicate, heart-shaped leaves that resemble love hearts. This variety is great for beginners and seasoned plant collectors alike!

🌱 Care Instructions:

  • Light: Hoya 'Bella' thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate some direct sunlight. It will grow well in areas with good light but will struggle in low-light conditions. If the plant doesn't receive enough light, it may not flower or grow as vigorously.

  • Watering: Let the top 1-2 inches of soil dry out before watering. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's best to water only when needed. During the winter months, reduce watering as the plant's growth slows. Be sure to allow the pot to drain completely after watering to prevent water from sitting in the bottom.

  • Humidity: Hoya 'Bella' enjoys average to high humidity. While it can tolerate average household humidity, it will thrive in a more humid environment, like a bathroom or kitchen. If the air is too dry, the plant may drop leaves or not flower as well. You can increase humidity by placing it on a humidity tray or by misting occasionally.

  • Temperature: This plant prefers warm temperatures, between 60°F and 85°F (16°C to 29°C). It is sensitive to cold drafts, so keep it away from windows that might get too cold or air conditioning vents. Hoya 'Bella' is not frost-tolerant, so make sure to bring it indoors during the colder months.

  • Soil: A well-draining soil mix is essential for this plant. A cactus/succulent mix or a regular potting mix with added perlite or orchid bark will provide good drainage. This will keep the roots from sitting in water, which could lead to root rot.

  • Fertilizing: During the growing season (spring and summer), fertilize your Hoya 'Bella' every 4-6 weeks with a balanced, liquid fertilizer. Reduce fertilizing in the fall and winter months when the plant is resting and growing slower.

  • Growth: Hoya 'Bella' is a vining plant that can grow up to 3 feet or more. It's perfect for hanging baskets, pots with trellises, or shelves where it can trail. If you want to encourage fuller growth, you can prune it back to keep it neat, or let it cascade for a more natural look.

  • Repotting: Hoya 'Bella' is a slow-growing plant and doesn't need to be repotted often. You can repot it every 2-3 years or when the roots outgrow the current pot. Make sure to choose a pot that has good drainage, as this helps prevent water from sitting at the bottom and causing root rot.

  • Propagation: Hoya 'Bella' can be propagated through stem cuttings. Simply cut a healthy stem with a node and a couple of leaves, then root it in water or directly in soil. Once roots have formed, you can plant it in a new pot.

  • Pests/Diseases: While Hoya 'Bella' is relatively pest-resistant, it may occasionally attract mealybugs, spider mites, or aphids. If pests are present, treat them with neem oil or an insecticidal soap. Make sure to avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot or fungal diseases.

  • Toxicity: Like most Hoyas, Hoya 'Bella' is toxic to pets (especially cats and dogs). It contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation if ingested. Keep the plant out of reach of pets and small children.

🌸 Flowers:

Hoya 'Bella' produces lovely clusters of small, star-shaped flowers that are typically white or pale pink with a red center. The flowers are fragrant, emitting a sweet, pleasant scent, and they usually bloom in the spring and summer. To encourage flowering, provide adequate light and avoid overwatering during the winter months.

🌟 Fun Fact:

The name "Hoya" comes from Thomas Hoy, a British gardener who was the first to cultivate the plant in the 19th century. The flowers of Hoya 'Bella' are often fragrant and attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, making them a great addition to any garden or indoor plant collection.
