Spathiphyllum Domino 'Peace Lily' (Variegated) 🌿

The Spathiphyllum Domino, also known as the Variegated Peace Lily, is a stunning, unique cultivar of the classic Peace Lily. This variety is known for its eye-catching, variegated foliage that features splashes of white, cream, and light green. Its distinctive, striking appearance combined with its easy-care nature makes it a great choice for both beginners and seasoned plant enthusiasts.

🌱 Care Instructions:

  • Light: The Spathiphyllum Domino thrives in bright, indirect light but can also adapt to low light conditions. While it will tolerate low light, it’s best to place the plant near a window with sheer curtains to avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the variegated leaves. If the leaves start to lose their vibrant variegation or become leggy, consider moving the plant to a brighter location.

  • Watering: The Peace Lily is a bit of a diva when it comes to water, as it prefers consistently moist soil. Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feels dry. Do not let the plant sit in water, as this can cause root rot. It is also important not to overwater, as the plant is susceptible to root rot. Make sure the pot has drainage holes and use a well-draining potting mix. The plant will tolerate slightly dry conditions, but it may start to droop and show signs of stress if underwatered for too long.

  • Soil: Use a well-draining houseplant soil mix or peat-based soil that retains some moisture but doesn't stay soggy. If you're using a potting mix with a lot of moisture-retaining ingredients, make sure it's not too dense to avoid the plant becoming waterlogged.

  • Temperature: The Spathiphyllum Domino prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Avoid placing it near cold drafts, air conditioners, or heaters, as temperature fluctuations can stress the plant. Keep it in a room with relatively stable warmth.

  • Humidity: This Peace Lily thrives in moderate to high humidity levels (50% or higher). If you live in a dry climate or winter heating makes your home dry, the plant might benefit from a humidifier or a humidity tray to keep the air moisture levels consistent. Regular misting is also beneficial but may not be as effective as using a humidifier.

  • Fertilizing: Feed your Spathiphyllum Domino every 6-8 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can cause the plant to become leggy and weak. In the fall and winter, the plant doesn’t need as much fertilizer because it's in a resting period.

  • Growth: The Spathiphyllum Domino can grow up to 2-3 feet tall and spread up to 2 feet wide. It’s a moderately fast-growing plant, especially if it’s given optimal light, water, and humidity. Over time, the plant may produce white flowers on long, slender stems, which are the signature of the Peace Lily family. The flowers emerge in spathe and spadix form, resembling a white “calla lily”-like bloom.

  • Flowers: The variegated Spathiphyllum Domino may produce the classic Peace Lily blooms, which are white and have a sweet fragrance. However, it is not always a guaranteed bloomer. The flowers typically last for a few weeks in the late spring or early summer, and they will need to be removed once they start to fade.

  • Pruning: Pruning isn’t usually necessary, but you can remove any dead or yellowing leaves to keep the plant looking neat. Simply cut off the affected leaves at their base, and the plant will continue to grow new foliage. If the plant gets too large for its space, you can trim the stems back slightly, but make sure not to remove too many leaves at once to avoid stressing the plant.

  • Toxicity: Keep in mind that Spathiphyllum Domino (like all Peace Lilies) is toxic to pets and humans if ingested. The plant contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation and discomfort if consumed. Keep it out of reach of curious pets and young children.

  • Propagation: You can propagate the Spathiphyllum Domino by dividing the plant during the spring or early summer when it’s actively growing. Simply remove the plant from its pot, carefully divide the root ball into sections, and re-pot the individual sections into fresh soil. Each new section will grow into a healthy new plant.

🌟 Fun Fact:

The Peace Lily is renowned for its ability to purify the air, as it can filter out common household toxins like benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene. It’s an excellent choice for improving indoor air quality in your home or office.
