Ceropegia woodii 'String of Hearts' 🌿

Ceropegia woodii, commonly known as String of Hearts, is a stunning trailing succulent from the Apocynaceae family. It features delicate, heart-shaped leaves that are green with silvery marbling or a purple tinge on the underside, making it a popular choice for hanging baskets or cascading planters. Its beautiful, trailing vines make it a great addition to any plant lover’s collection!

🌱 Care Instructions:

  • Light: String of Hearts thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the morning or evening. In lower light, the plant may become leggy, with longer spaces between the leaves. For best results, place it near a bright window with filtered light.

  • Watering: This plant is drought-tolerant and prefers to dry out between waterings. Water when the top 2 inches of soil feel dry. Be cautious not to overwater, as Ceropegia woodii is susceptible to root rot. In winter, reduce watering frequency as the plant enters a dormant phase.

  • Soil: String of Hearts does best in a well-draining potting mix designed for succulents or cacti. A mix with sand, perlite, or pumice will ensure that the soil doesn’t retain excess moisture, helping to prevent root rot.

  • Temperature: This plant prefers warm temperatures between 65°F to 85°F (18°C to 29°C). It is sensitive to cold and should not be exposed to temperatures below 50°F (10°C). Keep it in a warm room with stable temperatures to promote healthy growth.

  • Humidity: String of Hearts prefers low to average humidity. It’s well-suited to the dry air typically found in homes, but if your air is particularly dry, consider placing the plant near a humidifier or in a more humid environment like a bathroom with good natural light.

  • Fertilizing: Feed your Ceropegia woodii with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid fertilizing in the fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows down.

  • Growth: String of Hearts can grow up to 3-4 feet (90-120 cm) in length, with trailing vines that can be pruned back to keep it neat. Its vines will naturally form a cascading effect when placed in a hanging basket or allowed to trail down from a shelf or hanging pot.

  • Pruning: If the plant becomes too long or leggy, you can trim it back to maintain its shape and encourage denser growth. Simply cut the vines where you want to trim, and the plant will often sprout new growth.

  • Toxicity: Ceropegia woodii is non-toxic to both pets and humans, making it a safe plant for households with animals or children.

  • Propagation: String of Hearts can be propagated easily through stem cuttings. Cut a section of vine with at least one or two leaves and place it in water or moist soil. Roots should form in a few weeks, and you can then transplant the cutting into its own pot.

🌟 Fun Fact:

The Ceropegia woodii is sometimes called the “Rosary Vine” because of its trailing stems of heart-shaped leaves that resemble beads on a rosary, adding a unique and spiritual feel to its beauty.
