Hoya 'Kerrii' 🌿

Hoya 'Kerrii', commonly known as the Sweetheart Hoya or Valentine Plant, is a popular houseplant that features heart-shaped leaves, making it a romantic and appealing choice for plant enthusiasts. It's a slow-growing, easy-to-care-for plant that makes a beautiful addition to any indoor space.

🌱 Care Instructions:

  • Light: Hoya 'Kerrii' thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate lower light conditions, it will grow more slowly and may not flower as much. Direct sunlight may scorch the leaves, so it's best to place it in a spot with plenty of filtered light, such as near an east or west-facing window.

  • Watering: This Hoya is relatively drought-tolerant and prefers to dry out between waterings. Water it when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. During the growing season (spring and summer), water more frequently, but be sure to let excess water drain out, as soggy soil can cause root rot. In fall and winter, reduce watering.

  • Soil: Hoya 'Kerrii' does best in well-draining, slightly acidic soil. A cactus or succulent mix works well, or you can make your own mix by combining potting soil with perlite or orchid bark for better drainage.

  • Temperature: This Hoya prefers warm temperatures between 65°F to 85°F (18°C - 29°C). It is sensitive to cold drafts, so keep it away from windows or doors during the winter months. Avoid placing it in temperatures below 50°F (10°C).

  • Humidity: Hoya 'Kerrii' enjoys higher humidity but can tolerate average indoor humidity levels. If you live in a dry climate, consider placing the plant on a humidity tray or using a humidifier. It can tolerate lower humidity but may grow more slowly without added moisture.

  • Fertilizing: During the growing season (spring and summer), you can fertilize your Hoya 'Kerrii' once a month with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer. Avoid fertilizing during the fall and winter months when the plant is dormant.

  • Growth: This plant is relatively slow-growing and can eventually become a vining plant if given the proper support. It typically grows to around 3-6 feet (1-2 meters) in length when fully matured. Hoya 'Kerrii' can also be grown as a compact, trailing plant, making it perfect for hanging baskets or small spaces.

  • Pruning: Pruning is usually not required, but if your Hoya 'Kerrii' becomes leggy or if you want to encourage fuller growth, you can trim back the stems. Prune just above a leaf node to promote new growth.

  • Toxicity: Hoya 'Kerrii' is non-toxic to pets and humans, making it safe for households with curious pets or children.

  • Propagation: Hoya 'Kerrii' can be propagated through stem cuttings. Simply take a cutting with at least one leaf and a node (a small bump where roots will grow). Place the cutting in water or directly into moist soil, and it should root in a few weeks.

🌟 Fun Fact:

The heart-shaped leaves of the Hoya 'Kerrii' have earned it the affectionate nickname "Sweetheart Plant." This makes it a popular gift, especially around Valentine's Day, as the plant symbolizes love and affection.
