About the Sansevieria Genus

Commonly known as Snake Plants or Mother-in-Law's Tongue, plants traditionally classified within the genus Sansevieria are now recognized as part of the genus Dracaena following advances in DNA-based botanical research. These plants belong to the Asparagaceae family and are native primarily to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Madagascar, and southern Asia. Although their scientific classification has changed, the name Sansevieria remains widely used by horticulturists, collectors, and the houseplant community.

The original genus Sansevieria was established in 1794 by Swedish naturalist Carl Peter Thunberg, who named it in honor of Italian nobleman and patron of science Raimondo di Sangro, Prince of San Severo. In 2017, comprehensive genetic studies demonstrated that Sansevieria species are more accurately classified within the genus Dracaena, leading to one of the most significant taxonomic revisions in ornamental horticulture in recent years.

Sansevierias are best known for their upright, architectural foliage and exceptional drought tolerance. Their thick, succulent leaves store water, allowing them to thrive in environments where many tropical plants would struggle. Many species also utilize Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) photosynthesis, an adaptation that enables them to open their stomata at night rather than during the day, reducing water loss and helping them survive in hot, arid climates.

The genus includes an extraordinary diversity of growth forms, ranging from compact rosettes to towering sword-like leaves exceeding several feet in height. Collectors value Sansevierias for their striking patterns, unique variegation, cylindrical foliage, and remarkable resilience. Their adaptability to a wide range of indoor conditions has made them one of the most popular houseplants worldwide, while newly introduced cultivars continue to expand the diversity available to enthusiasts.
