Botanical Profile
About the Genus
Explore the history, native habitat, and botanical characteristics of this remarkable plant group.
About the Philodendron Genus
The genus Philodendron belongs to the Araceae (aroid) family and is one of the largest genera of flowering plants in the world, with more than 600 accepted species and new species continuing to be discovered and described throughout the tropical Americas. The name Philodendron comes from the Greek words "philo" (love) and "dendron" (tree), meaning "tree lover," a reference to the climbing habit of many species in their natural environment.
Philodendrons are native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, the Caribbean, and parts of Mexico, where they occupy a wide range of habitats. Many species begin life on the forest floor before climbing trees using aerial roots, while others grow as self-heading plants that remain upright throughout their lives. This diversity in growth habit has allowed Philodendrons to evolve into one of the most varied and adaptable genera within the aroid family.
One of the defining features of Philodendrons is the incredible diversity of their foliage. Leaves range from small, heart-shaped blades to enormous deeply lobed or highly textured forms, with colors spanning rich greens, silvery hues, dramatic variegation, and nearly black foliage. Many species also produce distinctive cataphylls that protect emerging leaves, while mature plants often develop impressive aerial root systems as they climb.
Today, Philodendrons are among the most popular tropical houseplants in the world, valued for both their ornamental beauty and remarkable diversity. Whether grown for dramatic foliage, unusual leaf shape, or striking variegation, they offer something for every collector, from beginner-friendly favorites to highly sought-after specialty varieties.
At Prop & Grow, our Philodendron collection features healthy, greenhouse-grown plants selected for their quality, vigor, and exceptional foliage. From dependable classics to unique collector selections, every plant is carefully grown and shipped from our Florida greenhouse, allowing you to build your collection with confidence.
Plant Care FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about growing, displaying, and caring for Hoyas.
Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. Philodendrons prefer evenly moist soil but should never sit in standing water. Reduce watering slightly during cooler months when growth naturally slows.
Philodendrons thrive in bright, indirect light. While many varieties tolerate lower light, brighter conditions encourage stronger growth, richer color, and larger leaves. Avoid prolonged direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the foliage.
Philodendrons appreciate moderate to high humidity and often produce healthier, larger foliage in more humid environments. While they adapt well to average household humidity, using a humidifier or grouping plants together can encourage even better growth.
It depends on the variety. Many philodendrons are natural climbers and benefit from a moss pole or support, while others have a self-heading growth habit and grow upright without additional support. Providing the appropriate growing conditions helps the plant reach its full potential.
Yes. Philodendrons contain naturally occurring calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation if chewed or ingested by cats, dogs, or people. Keep the plant out of reach of curious pets and small children.
