Othonna Capensis 'Ruby Necklace'
Othonna Capensis 'Ruby Necklace,' also known as Ruby Necklace Succulent, is a charming, trailing succulent known for its striking appearance. The plant produces long, cascading strands of small, bead-like purple leaves that resemble a necklace. It's a wonderful addition to hanging baskets, planters, or as a unique focal point in succulent arrangements.
🌱 Care Instructions:
-
Light: Othonna Capensis 'Ruby Necklace' thrives in bright, indirect light. It can also handle some direct sunlight, which helps deepen the purple color of the leaves. However, too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, so be sure to place it in a spot with filtered light during the hottest part of the day.
-
Watering: Like many succulents, this plant prefers to dry out completely between waterings. Water it thoroughly but infrequently. Water only when the soil is dry to the touch, typically every 1-2 weeks. During the winter months, reduce watering as the plant’s growth slows down. Overwatering is a common issue for succulents, so be sure not to let the plant sit in water.
-
Humidity: Othonna Capensis is tolerant of low humidity levels. It does well in normal household humidity, making it an excellent choice for homes and offices without specialized humidity control.
-
Temperature: This plant prefers warm temperatures between 60°F and 85°F (16°C to 29°C). It should not be exposed to cold drafts or temperatures below 50°F (10°C), as it is sensitive to frost.
-
Soil: Use well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix. This helps to prevent water retention, which can lead to root rot. It’s crucial to have a pot with drainage holes for proper water runoff.
-
Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength during the growing season (spring and summer). Fertilize once a month. Avoid fertilizing in the fall and winter when the plant is not actively growing.
-
Growth: Othonna Capensis 'Ruby Necklace' grows in long, trailing strands that can reach 1-2 feet in length. The small leaves are a beautiful, vibrant purple, adding a pop of color to any space. The plant also produces small yellow daisy-like flowers in the summer, though they are not the primary draw.
-
Repotting: Repotting is not necessary unless the plant has outgrown its current container or the soil has become compacted. When repotting, ensure that the new pot has drainage holes to prevent water from pooling at the bottom.
-
Propagation: This succulent is easily propagated by cuttings. To propagate, simply cut a healthy stem and let the cut end dry for a day or two. Once it’s calloused, place the cutting in a new pot with well-draining soil and water sparingly until it roots.
-
Pests/Diseases: 'Ruby Necklace' is relatively pest-resistant, but it may occasionally attract mealybugs, aphids, or spider mites. Inspect the plant regularly for pests and treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if necessary. Avoid overwatering, which can cause root rot or fungal issues.
-
Toxicity: This plant is non-toxic to pets and humans, making it a safe option for households with curious animals or children.
🌟 Fun Fact:
The vibrant purple color of the beads comes from the plant’s ability to store water in its fleshy leaves, which also gives it its signature succulent appearance. The name “Ruby Necklace” comes from its stunning, necklace-like strands of beads that hang down in a cascade.
