Calathea Ornata 'Pinstripe' 🌿

Calathea Ornata, also known as the Pinstripe Calathea, is a strikingly beautiful houseplant that belongs to the Marantaceae family. It is loved for its bold green leaves with distinct pink or white pinstripe patterns running along the veins, making it an eye-catching addition to any indoor space. The plant has a graceful, tropical vibe and is perfect for adding a splash of color and texture to your home.

🌱 Care Instructions:

  • Light: Calathea Ornata prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some lower light conditions. Direct sunlight may scorch the leaves and cause the vibrant stripes to fade. Ideal placement is near a window with filtered sunlight.

  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy. Water when the top inch of the soil feels dry to the touch. This plant is sensitive to tap water containing chlorine and fluoride, so it’s best to use distilled water, filtered water, or allow tap water to sit for 24 hours before using it.

  • Soil: This plant thrives in well-draining, airy potting soil that retains moisture but does not stay too wet. A mix designed for houseplants or one with peat moss and perlite is ideal for Calathea Ornata.

  • Temperature: Calathea Ornata prefers warm temperatures between 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C). It’s important to keep it away from cold drafts, air conditioners, or heaters, as it is sensitive to temperature fluctuations.

  • Humidity: Calatheas generally love high humidity. Aim to keep the humidity around 60-70% for optimal growth. If you live in a dry climate or have low indoor humidity, consider using a humidifier, placing the plant on a moisture tray, or grouping it with other plants to maintain the moisture level.

  • Fertilizing: Feed your Calathea Ornata with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid fertilizing in the fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows down.

  • Growth: Calathea Ornata grows slowly, and it typically reaches a height of 1 to 2 feet (30-60 cm), making it a good option for smaller spaces or decorative containers. Its lush foliage creates an appealing, compact display.

  • Pruning: If the plant gets damaged or if you notice yellowing or browning of the leaves, you can trim them back with clean, sharp scissors. Make sure to only remove the affected leaves to avoid harming the healthy growth.

  • Toxicity: Calathea Ornata is non-toxic to both pets and humans, making it a safe option for households with children and animals.

  • Propagation: This plant can be propagated by division. Gently remove the plant from its pot and separate the root ball into smaller sections, ensuring each section has roots and healthy foliage. Replant each division in its own pot.

🌟 Fun Fact:

The Calathea Ornata is also called the “Pinstripe Calathea” because of its beautiful, pin-like pink or white streaks on its dark green leaves. The plant is known for its nyctinasty behavior, meaning its leaves fold up at night and unfold during the day. This is a natural process that occurs as the plant reacts to changing light conditions.
