Calathea 'Makoyana' (Peacock Plant) 🌿
Calathea 'Makoyana', commonly known as the Peacock Plant, is a stunning, ornamental plant loved for its beautifully patterned leaves. The plant features dark green leaves with lighter green and silver streaks, giving it a peacock-feather-like appearance. The undersides of the leaves are deep purple, making it even more striking when the leaves are turned over. Its vibrant, patterned foliage adds an exotic touch to any room.
🌱 Care Instructions:
-
Light: Calathea 'Makoyana' thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light conditions but will lose some of its vibrancy. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves, causing the beautiful patterns to fade and the leaves to brown.
-
Watering: Calathea 'Makoyana' enjoys consistent moisture but does not like to sit in water. Water the plant when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Use lukewarm, filtered water, as tap water with high mineral content or chlorine can cause leaf damage. Ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent water from accumulating at the bottom.
-
Soil: A well-draining, peaty potting mix works best for Calathea 'Makoyana'. A standard houseplant mix with added perlite or coconut coir for aeration is ideal to promote healthy root growth and avoid waterlogging.
-
Temperature: Calathea 'Makoyana' prefers warm temperatures between 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Keep the plant away from cold drafts, air conditioners, or heating vents, as it does not tolerate sudden temperature changes or cold air.
-
Humidity: Calatheas, including 'Makoyana,' thrive in high humidity. Aim for 60% humidity or higher for the best results. To increase humidity, you can place the plant on a humidity tray, use a humidifier, or regularly mist the leaves. This will help keep the leaves from curling or browning at the edges.
-
Fertilizing: During the growing season (spring and summer), you can feed Calathea 'Makoyana' with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month. Reduce fertilizing in the fall and winter when the plant's growth slows. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to salt buildup in the soil, which can damage the roots.
-
Growth: This plant grows slowly but steadily, reaching a height of about 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) tall with a spread of about 18 inches (45 cm). The unique leaf pattern makes it an excellent choice for adding color and interest to spaces.
-
Pruning: Pruning Calathea 'Makoyana' is minimal. Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to maintain its overall appearance. It's also a good idea to wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust, which can interfere with photosynthesis.
-
Flowers: Calathea 'Makoyana' rarely flowers when grown indoors, and the flowers are typically small and inconspicuous. The main attraction of this plant is its striking foliage.
-
Toxicity: Calathea 'Makoyana' is non-toxic to both pets and humans, making it a great choice for households with curious pets or children.
-
Propagation: You can propagate Calathea 'Makoyana' by dividing the plant during repotting. Carefully separate the roots into smaller sections, ensuring that each section has enough roots and foliage to grow on its own. Pot the divisions in separate containers and treat them as individual plants.
🌟 Fun Fact:
Calathea plants, including 'Makoyana,' are often referred to as "prayer plants" because their leaves fold up at night, a behavior known as nyctinasty. This occurs in response to changes in light levels, and it gives the appearance that the plant is "praying."
